Genre Research Blog (Sci-fi)

They say that Gen Z is the generation of questions.  We are constantly questioning things around us about ourselves or others or about the universe.  This is why I believe talking about Science-Fiction movies is quite important and relatable for today's blog.

What is Science fiction?

Science Fiction is defined as fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets.  Due to the amount of questioning that Gen Z does, this genre is highly popular at the moment as teenagers are being exposed to new ideas about life and this world.  Teens are the target audience for this genre.  Although it is very popular it is very risky because of the high budget cost of this genre. Sci-fi movies are one of the most expensive kinds of movies to produce.

EX: The color pallets used throughout the film, are used to give a sense of mystery as that is a big thing in this movie.

Steven Spielberg produced and directed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,  the story is about a little kid who becomes friends with an alien named E.T. who has been left behind on Earth. Elliott needs to figure out a means to assist E.T. in returning home, along with his friends and family.  This movie is targeted towards teenagers as it allows us to believe in other possible life in this universe and gives us many different ideas of how that may look like.  The long pause before E.T's face is revealed in the middle of all the other dolls in the closet creates this sense of mystery and suspense.

Ex: Jurasic Park uses many fact cuts throughout the production to indicate that these dinasours in the past were in fact very quick worrissom

The movie takes place on the fictitious island of Isla Nublar, which is situated off the Pacific coast of Central America close to Costa Rica. There, a group of genetic scientists and rich businessman John Hammond have built a dinosaur wildlife park. A small handful of guests and Hammond's grandkids battle to live and flee the dangerous island after industrial sabotage causes a catastrophic breakdown of the park's electrical facilities and security measures.  This Science-Fiction film was created to target teenagers and make them imagine what it would be like to live during the same era as dinosaurs.  The film's
distinctive color pallet as well as sound and quick cuts allow the film to feel more intense making it play with the audience's mind making them believe that dinosaurs would destroy humankind.

Ex: The 100 uses a lot of new technology giving the audience new perspective and ideas about what the future may hold.

The 100 is a television series about post-apocalyptic Ark survivors who come back to Earth after almost a century has passed after a horrific nuclear war. A group of young offenders is the first transferred to Earth, where they come into contact with survivors of the nuclear holocaust.  The mise-en-scene and advanced technology in this series of films make people think about whether or not that is what the future is going to look like.  The Cast was chosen to be younger adults, likely to be more relatable to the target audience which in this case is teens.
